When Is the Best Time to Tackle Aquatic Weeds?
Aquatic weeds are a natural part of most waterbodies - but when they start to dominate, they can cause real issues. From blocking access and reducing water quality to disrupting wildlife habitats, uncontrolled weed growth is a problem best dealt with promptly.
But timing is key. Act too early, and weeds may regrow over the warm summer months. Leave it too late, and the issue becomes harder - and more expensive - to manage.
So how do you know when it’s the right time to clear aquatic weeds?
Not Too Early - Not Too Late
There’s no perfect time that suits every site. The ideal timing depends on the type of weeds, the depth and flow of the water, and the local climate. However, a good general rule is to act when weeds are:
Becoming visibly established
Starting to spread, but not yet taking over
Beginning to affect water clarity or access
Clearing at this stage can make a real difference. It often makes the job quicker and less disruptive, and may reduce the need for repeat visits later in the season. That said, some sites will still require two clearances a year, regardless of timing - especially if the water is shallow, slow-moving, or nutrient-rich.
Signs It’s Time to Act
If you’re seeing any of the following, it may be time to consider clearance:
Reeds, lilies, or other emergent plants beginning to spread
Submerged weeds rising toward the surface
Floating weed (like duckweed) starting to form patches
Water becoming cloudy, murky, or low in flow
Access becoming difficult for fishing, boating, or livestock
Wildlife avoiding certain areas of the water
Acting at this stage - before the weeds take hold - is usually the most efficient and cost-effective approach.
Can Good Timing Prevent Regrowth?
In some cases, yes - tackling weeds at the right moment can help keep them under control for the rest of the season. But it depends on many factors:
The specific plants present
How nutrient-rich the water is (nutrients feed weed growth)
Recent weather patterns, especially heat and sunlight
How shallow and still the water is
We won’t make unrealistic promises - even with good timing, some sites will still need a second visit. But with our help, you can reduce the likelihood of that happening.

Unsure When to Act? We Can Help
Every waterbody is different, and it’s not always obvious when to act. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to provide advice - whether that’s reviewing site photos, or offering guidance based on what we’re seeing in similar environments.
Getting the timing right won’t stop weeds forever - but it can make a big difference.
